GDC POSTMORTEM

Our Explorer bravely plunged into the chaos of GDC, navigating through every nook and cranny of the venue and encountering some of the most enigmatic figures.

Here's his debrief from the front lines upon completing the mission:

Vibe: You could practically feel the frenzy in the air, like the XR industry was about to explode.  The event hummed with talented developers, publishers, media, XR stores, and networking activities. Insane!

Stores:

  • META: Improved its Oculus+ subscription service, experimenting with formats and game genres. Saw some seriously promising game teasers!

  • HTC: Dropped its store's commission for developers to an unbelievable 10% and showcased impressive full-body trackers.

  • Pico: Works hard on their new unique activities and rapidly expands the number of upcoming releases.

Sony: Made huge progress in porting and licensing post-PSVR2. Even though there's talk about them hitting pause on headset production, VR publishers are still pumping out game announcements.

Apple: Brought a lot of interest to the field from non-VR enthusiasts with its new device. The AVP shows promise, but let's see what will happen to the game aspect.

Steam: Keeps upgrading its VR-related activities and throwing down some sweet promotions.

Influencers: There's a surge in VR-related media and YouTubers, and improved networking activities and matching systems have made it easier to connect with them. And one shouldn't underestimate the power of keeping the community engaged with dev diaries and teasers.

Publishers: Caught up with the usual suspects and some fresh faces too. Loads of creative ideas and major plans in the works!

Developers: Can't get over the flood of cool game ideas and new talent in our community. Brace yourselves for a wild ride of awesome games this year!

Huge thanks to everyone for sharing genius ideas, insights, stories, and postmortems. In VR, we trust!
